Accommodation
You will be accommodated Doctors House , located very close to the hospital and just a few meters from the beach of Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi). Probably the most beautiful house in the village, some parts of which are 100 years old, it features a lounge with a living and dining area, two bedrooms, a bathroom with a washbasin, shower (including hot water), and toilet (last modernized in 2013), as well as a large terrace. You usually won’t need an alarm clock because monkeys run across the corrugated iron roof around 6 a.m., just in time for sunrise. The house is equipped with German power sockets, and unless there is a power outage, the electricity supply is typically uninterrupted.
During your stay, a cook will provide you with meals and hot water for tea or instant coffee. Cooking is done outside on an open fire. You can discuss with the cook what you would like to have prepared, but she does not speak English, so having a Swahili phrasebook or translator is useful. There are various seasonal fruits and vegetables available, such as mangoes, bananas, melons, papayas, spinach, and cabbage. Rice, potatoes, cassava, and noodles are staple foods. There is probably nowhere else you can get fresher fish and meat—either freshly caught or freshly slaughtered.
Leisure
The region is virtually undeveloped in terms of infrastructure, so there are no typical leisure facilities.
Lake Nyasa, with its long sandy beach, is just a few minutes' walk away. You can swim there or go fishing with the local fishermen. The sunsets on the beach at Joseph's Pub are not to be missed. Joseph can also organize one-day or multi-day hiking tours into the Livingstone Mountains. Before or after the clinical traineeship, it is highly recommended that you travel around the country, for example, on safari, to Kilimanjaro, or to Zanzibar. We are happy to provide tips for every budget and depending on the duration of your trip.
